what is it?
The MIFERMA Class CC 01-21 diesel locomotives were built by Alstom in France between 1961 and 1965. The locomotives had been commissioned by the Sociéte Anonyme des Mines de Fer de Mauritanie (MIFERMA), then the owner of the Mauritania Railway, which, since its completion in 1963, has connected the iron ore mine in Zouerate with the port of Nouadhibou, Mauritania. The CC Class 01-21 locomotives were based upon the SNCF Class CC 65000, a French passenger diesel locomotive also built by Alstom.
base stats
Bars compare against all trains: 600 km/h (maglev), 1,700 seats; power, weight and number built on a log scale up to 20 MW, 1,000 t and 20,000 built.
fun facts
- First built 65 years ago, in 1961.
- 1 MW is about 12 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
- Weighs about as much as 21 African elephants (~6 t each).
- 22.7 m long: about 5 cars parked nose to tail.
diesel locomotive: A diesel engine on board drives the wheels, usually through a generator (diesel-electric).
