what is it?

The MI 09 (French: Matériel d'Interconnexion de 2009, lit. 'interconnection rolling stock of 2009') is a double-deck, dual-voltage electric multiple unit trainset operated on line A of the Réseau Express Régional (RER), a hybrid suburban commuter and rapid transit system serving Paris and its surrounding Île-de-France region. A total of 140 five-car trainsets were built by a consortium of Alstom and Bombardier. Based on the earlier MI 2N series and part of Alstom's X'Trapolis Duplex platform, the MI 09 units were assembled at Alstom's factory in Valenciennes factory and Bombardier's facility in Crespin between 2010 and 2017.

base stats

  • speed 120 km/htop speed
  • power 3.9 MWpower output
  • weight 288 tin working order

Bars compare against all trains: 600 km/h (maglev), 1,700 seats; power, weight and number built on a log scale up to 20 MW, 1,000 t and 20,000 built.

fun facts

  • First built 15 years ago, in 2011.
  • 3.9 MW is about 46 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
  • Weighs about as much as 48 African elephants (~6 t each).
  • 22 m long: about 5 cars parked nose to tail.

multiple unit: A self-propelled train: motors are spread under the passenger cars, so no separate locomotive.
