what is it?

CFL Class 2200 is a series of electric multiple units built by Alstom for CFL. The trains are similar to the French SNCF Class Z 26500. In 2006, EMU 2207 collided head-on with a freight train in the Zoufftgen train collision, resulting in 6 deaths. Damaged parts of the train were removed and replaced by new sections.

fun facts

  • First built 21 years ago, in 2005.
  • Top speed is 1.2× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).

  • Weighs about as much as 32 African elephants (~6 t each).
  • 81.1 m long: about 18 cars parked nose to tail.
  • Seats 339: 7 full city buses (~50 seats each).
  • Still in service after 21 years.

multiple unit: A self-propelled train: motors are spread under the passenger cars, so no separate locomotive.
