what is it?
The Voith Maxima are a family of diesel-hydraulic locomotives built by Voith Turbo Lokomotivtechnik GmbH & Co. KG., a subsidiary of Voith. Initially, two versions of a 6-axle C'C' machine were offered with medium speed engines from the Anglo-Belgian Corporation: the Maxima 30CC and Maxima 40CC (the most powerful single-engined diesel-hydraulic locomotive in the world, rated at 3,600 kW (4,800 hp)).
base stats
Bars compare against all trains: 600 km/h (maglev), 1,700 seats; power, weight and number built on a log scale up to 20 MW, 1,000 t and 20,000 built.
fun facts
- First built 20 years ago, in 2006.
- Top speed is 1.1× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).
- 3.6 MW is about 42 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
- 23.2 m long: about 5 cars parked nose to tail.
diesel locomotive: A diesel engine on board drives the wheels, usually through a generator (diesel-electric).
