what is it?
The Dv12 (Sv12 and Sr12 until 1977) is the standard Finnish medium-weight diesel-hydraulic road switcher operated by VR. As all the main lines of Finnish railway network have been electrificied, the locomotive is designated mostly to unelectrified, less frequently used side lines. Occasionally it may still pull cargo trains on main lines. It has also been put in service as a shunter, replacing older classes Dv15 and Dv16 as they were retired.

base stats
Bars compare against all trains: 600 km/h (maglev), 1,700 seats; power, weight and number built on a log scale up to 20 MW, 1,000 t and 20,000 built.
fun facts
- First built 63 years ago, in 1963.
- 1 MW is about 12 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
- Weighs about as much as 10 African elephants (~6 t each).
- 14 m long: about 3 cars parked nose to tail.
- Still in service after 63 years.
diesel locomotive: A diesel engine on board drives the wheels, usually through a generator (diesel-electric).
