what is it?
The Eurorunner family of locomotives are a series of medium- to high-power diesel–electric locomotives built by Siemens for the European market. Introduced from 2002 onwards, they share design characteristics with the successful Eurosprinter range of electric locomotives, also built by Siemens. The main initial order for these locomotives was for 100 of the four-axle ER20 for ÖBB and designated ÖBB type 2016, and commonly called Hercules; further smaller orders from smaller railway companies have also been fulfilled.
base stats
Bars compare against all trains: 600 km/h (maglev), 1,700 seats; power, weight and number built on a log scale up to 20 MW, 1,000 t and 20,000 built.
fun facts
- Top speed is 1.1× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).
- 2 MW is about 24 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
- Weighs about as much as 13 African elephants (~6 t each).
diesel locomotive: A diesel engine on board drives the wheels, usually through a generator (diesel-electric).
