what is it?
The RABDe 8/16 are a consequential further development of the RABDe 12/12 multiple units used by the Swiss Federal Railways. They were, like the RABDe 12/12, designed for quick acceleration in commuter traffic. But in contrast to the RABDe 12/12, they didn't reach this goal with a lot of motor power, but rather by having a lightweight aluminium construction.
base stats
Bars compare against all trains: 600 km/h (maglev), 1,700 seats; power, weight and number built on a log scale up to 20 MW, 1,000 t and 20,000 built.
fun facts
- First built 50 years ago, in 1976.
- 2.3 MW is about 26 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
- Weighs about as much as 25 African elephants (~6 t each).
- 100 m long: about 22 cars parked nose to tail.
multiple unit: A self-propelled train: motors are spread under the passenger cars, so no separate locomotive.
