what is it?
The E353 series (E353系) is a DC tilting electric multiple unit (EMU) train operated by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) in Japan on limited express services on the Chūō Main Line since December 2017. A pre-series train, consisting of one nine-car set (set S101) and one three-car set (set S201), was delivered in July 2015 for performance testing. These trains replaced the older E351 series EMUs used on Super Azusa (now Azusa) limited express services on the Chūō Main Line between Shinjuku in Tokyo and Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture.
who runs it
base stats
Bars compare against all trains: 600 km/h (maglev), 1,700 seats; power, weight and number built on a log scale up to 20 MW, 1,000 t and 20,000 built.
fun facts
- First built 9 years ago, in 2017.
- 2.8 MW is about 33 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
- 20 m long: about 4 cars parked nose to tail.
- Seats 686: 14 full city buses (~50 seats each).
multiple unit: A self-propelled train: motors are spread under the passenger cars, so no separate locomotive.
