what is it?

NSB Class 72 (Norwegian: NSB type 72) is a class of 36 electric multiple units built by AnsaldoBreda for the Norwegian State Railways (now Vy). Delivered between 2002 and 2005, the four-car units operate on the Oslo Commuter Rail and the Jæren Commuter Rail. fun facts

  • First built 24 years ago, in 2002.
  • Top speed is 1.2× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).

  • 2.6 MW is about 30 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
  • Weighs about as much as 10 African elephants (~6 t each).
  • 85.6 m long: about 19 cars parked nose to tail.
  • Seats 310: 6 full city buses (~50 seats each).
  • Still in service after 24 years.

multiple unit: A self-propelled train: motors are spread under the passenger cars, so no separate locomotive.
