what is it?

The EMD FP9 is an American 1,750 horsepower (1,300 kW), B-B dual-service passenger and freight-hauling diesel locomotive that was produced between February 1954 and December 1959 by General Motors Electro-Motive Division, and General Motors Diesel. Final assembly was at GM-EMD's La Grange, Illinois plant, except for Canadian orders, which were assembled by Canadian subsidiary GMD at London, Ontario. The FP9 was essentially EMD's F9 locomotive extended by 4 feet (1.2 m) to give greater steam generator and water capacity for hauling passenger trains.

  • power 1.3 MWpower output
  • weight 118 tin working order
  • built 90made in total

Bars compare against all trains: 600 km/h (maglev), 1,700 seats; power, weight and number built on a log scale up to 20 MW, 1,000 t and 20,000 built.

fun facts

  • First built 72 years ago, in 1954.
  • Top speed is 1.3× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).
  • At full speed it would cover Amsterdam–Utrecht (≈ 40 km) in 14 minutes.
  • 1.3 MW is about 15 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
  • Weighs about as much as 20 African elephants (~6 t each).
  • 16.8 m long: about 4 cars parked nose to tail.

multiple unit: A self-propelled train: motors are spread under the passenger cars, so no separate locomotive.
