what is it?
The GE AC4400CW, sometimes referred to as "AC44CW", is a 4,400 horsepower (3,300 kW) diesel-electric locomotive that was built by GE Transportation Systems between 1993 and 2004. It is similar to the Dash 9-44CW, but uses AC traction motors instead of DC, with a separate inverter per motor. 3,018 units were built for North American railroads over an 11-year production and 577 AC44i units for the Brazilian railroads.

fun facts
- First built 33 years ago, in 1993.
- 3.3 MW is about 39 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
- Weighs about as much as 32 African elephants (~6 t each).
- 22.3 m long: about 5 cars parked nose to tail.
diesel locomotive: A diesel engine on board drives the wheels, usually through a generator (diesel-electric).
