what is it?
The EMD SDP35 is a model of 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between July 1964 and September 1965. Power was provided by an EMD 567D3A 16-cylinder engine which generated 2,500 horsepower (1.9 MW). fun facts
- First built 62 years ago, in 1964.
- Top speed is 1.2× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).
- 1.9 MW is about 22 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
- Weighs about as much as 27 African elephants (~6 t each).
- 18.3 m long: about 4 cars parked nose to tail.
diesel locomotive: A diesel engine on board drives the wheels, usually through a generator (diesel-electric).
