what is it?
The 209 series (209系) is an electric multiple unit (EMU) commuter train type operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) in the Tokyo area of Japan since 1993. The series was introduced in 1992 for experimental operations (as the 901 series) and in 1993 for commercial operations to replace the aging 103 series stock on the Keihin–Tōhoku and Negishi lines. The concept of the 209 series was to create a lower-cost, limited lifespan train (approximately 15 years) that would be replaced rather than rebuilt when they reached the end of their operational lives.
who runs it
base stats
Bars compare against all trains: 600 km/h (maglev), 1,700 seats; power, weight and number built on a log scale up to 20 MW, 1,000 t and 20,000 built.
fun facts
- First built 34 years ago, in 1992.
- 1.5 MW is about 18 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
- 20 m long: about 4 cars parked nose to tail.
- Still in service after 34 years.
multiple unit: A self-propelled train: motors are spread under the passenger cars, so no separate locomotive.
