what is it?
The LNER Class A4 is a class of streamlined 4-6-2 steam locomotives designed by Nigel Gresley for the London and North Eastern Railway in 1935. Their streamlined design gave them high-speed capability as well as making them instantly recognisable, and one of the class, 4468 Mallard, holds the record as the world's fastest steam locomotive. Thirty-five of the class were built to haul express passenger trains on the East Coast Main Line route from London King's Cross via York to Newcastle, and later via Newcastle to Edinburgh.

- First built 91 years ago, in 1935.
- Top speed is 1.6× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).
- At full speed it would cover Amsterdam–Utrecht (≈ 40 km) in 12 minutes.
- Weighs about as much as 17 African elephants (~6 t each).
- 21.6 m long: about 5 cars parked nose to tail.
- Served for 31 years (1935–1966).
steam locomotive: Burns coal, wood or oil to boil water; the steam drives pistons that turn the wheels.
