what is it?

The HXD3D (Chinese: 和谐3D型电力机车) is a high power electric locomotive of China rated at 7.5 MW as it uses 6 Toshiba traction motors rated at 1.25 MW. The locomotive is produced by CRRC Dalian Locomotive Co. LTD. The HXD3D, similar to the HXD1D, is expected to alleviate the operational challenges associated with quasi-high-speed locomotives and to address the lack of actual quasi-high-speed applications for high-power AC locomotives in mainland China.

base stats

  • speed 160 km/htop speed
  • power 7.5 MWpower output
  • weight 126 tin working order
  • built 521made in total

Bars compare against all trains: 600 km/h (maglev), 1,700 seats; power, weight and number built on a log scale up to 20 MW, 1,000 t and 20,000 built.

fun facts

  • First built 14 years ago, in 2012.
  • Top speed is 1.2× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).
  • At full speed it would cover Amsterdam–Utrecht (≈ 40 km) in 15 minutes.
  • 7.5 MW is about 88 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
  • Weighs about as much as 21 African elephants (~6 t each).
  • 23 m long: about 5 cars parked nose to tail.

electric locomotive: Draws power from overhead wires or a third rail and pulls separate carriages.
