what is it?
The Sm4 electric multiple unit (EMU) is a low-floor train used by the VR Group for its VR commuter rail services. The initial order was for ten EMUs with the first unit entering service in 1999. Another 20 units were ordered in 2002 and the deliveries were completed in 2005.

fun facts
- First built 27 years ago, in 1999.
- Top speed is 1.2× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).
- At full speed it would cover Amsterdam–Utrecht (≈ 40 km) in 15 minutes.
- 1.2 MW is about 14 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
- Weighs about as much as 19 African elephants (~6 t each).
- 26.5 m long: about 6 cars parked nose to tail.
- Seats 100: 2 full city buses (~50 seats each).
multiple unit: A self-propelled train: motors are spread under the passenger cars, so no separate locomotive.
