what is it?
The ÖBB Class 1044/1144 is a series of four-axle electric locomotives designed and manufactured by Simmering-Graz-Pauker AG in Graz. Developed initially for the ÖBB, Austria's state-owned railway company, the model is considered to be a significant milestone in locomotive construction. Upon its introduction in 1976, the 1044s were among the most powerful four-axle electric locomotives in the world.

fun facts
- First built 50 years ago, in 1976.
- Top speed is 1.2× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).
- At full speed it would cover Amsterdam–Utrecht (≈ 40 km) in 15 minutes.
- 5.2 MW is about 61 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
- Weighs about as much as 14 African elephants (~6 t each).
- 16.1 m long: about 4 cars parked nose to tail.
- Served for 18 years (1977–1995).
electric locomotive: Draws power from overhead wires or a third rail and pulls separate carriages.
