what is it?
The Z 23000 was a type of passenger train used by the Compagnie du Chemin de Fer Métropolitain de Paris (CMP). Better known during its 50 years of service as the "Z railcar" ("automotrice Z"), it was introduced in 1937 to serve the Sceaux Line in the southern suburbs of Paris, which had been modernized and electrified by 1937. The Z 23000 cars were built with identical motors, and were the first generation of modern self-propelled locomotive technology engineered for a future regional metro network, which would not be created until forty years later as the Réseau Express Régional (RER).

base stats
Bars compare against all trains: 600 km/h (maglev), 1,700 seats; power, weight and number built on a log scale up to 20 MW, 1,000 t and 20,000 built.
fun facts
- First built 89 years ago, in 1937.
- 1.4 MW is about 16 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
- Weighs about as much as 7 African elephants (~6 t each).
- 20.7 m long: about 5 cars parked nose to tail.
- Served for 50 years (1937–1987).
multiple unit: A self-propelled train: motors are spread under the passenger cars, so no separate locomotive.
