what is it?
The Z-TER (Z 21500) is a French model of electric multiple unit regional passenger train, manufactured by Alstom and Bombardier Transportation, and operated by SNCF. They are used on regional links, and can be coupled with another Z-TER. They are derived from the French diesel passenger regional train "X-TER" (SNCF Class X 72500), and is the first regional train to reach 200 km/h. Their main characteristic is their ability to travel at 124.27 mph (200 km/h), which constitutes a first for TER self-propelled equipment. This ability, used every day over several sections of conventional lines, is also operated for the first time on a high speed line since 2017.

base stats
Bars compare against all trains: 600 km/h (maglev), 1,700 seats; power, weight and number built on a log scale up to 20 MW, 1,000 t and 20,000 built.
fun facts
- First built 23 years ago, in 2003.
- Top speed is 1.5× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).
- At full speed it would cover Amsterdam–Utrecht (≈ 40 km) in 12 minutes.
- 1.8 MW is about 21 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
- Weighs about as much as 27 African elephants (~6 t each).
- 79.2 m long: about 18 cars parked nose to tail.
- Seats 211: 4 full city buses (~50 seats each).
multiple unit: A self-propelled train: motors are spread under the passenger cars, so no separate locomotive.
