what is it?
VR Class Dr13 (before 1 January 1976 called Hr13) was a heavy diesel locomotive used by VR Group. The Dr13 was designed by the French company Alstom. The class consisted of 54 locomotives, of which the first two were built by Alstom’s factory in Belfort, France and were shipped to Finland in 1962, while the rest were built in Tampere at the factories of Lokomo (odd numbers) and Valmet (even numbers).

- First built 64 years ago, in 1962.
- Top speed is 1.1× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).
- 2.1 MW is about 24 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
- Weighs about as much as 17 African elephants (~6 t each).
- 18.6 m long: about 4 cars parked nose to tail.
- Served for 38 years (1962–2000).
diesel locomotive: A diesel engine on board drives the wheels, usually through a generator (diesel-electric).
