what is it?
The MI 84 (French: Matériel d'Interconnexion de 1984, English: interconnection rolling stock of 1984), also known as the Class Z 8100, is a dual-voltage electric multiple unit trainset that is operated on line B of the Réseau Express Régional (RER), a hybrid suburban commuter and rapid transit system serving Paris and its Île-de-France suburbs. The 73 four-car trains were built by a consortium of French manufacturers Alstom and ANF Industrie (which would be purchased by Bombardier in 1989 before the end of the deliveries). The final assembly of the trains was performed at Alstom's Valenciennes factory and ANF's Crespin factory between 1985 and 1990.
who runs it
base stats
Bars compare against all trains: 600 km/h (maglev), 1,700 seats; power, weight and number built on a log scale up to 20 MW, 1,000 t and 20,000 built.
fun facts
- First built 42 years ago, in 1984.
- 2.8 MW is about 33 family cars (~85 kW each) flat out.
- Weighs about as much as 34 African elephants (~6 t each).
- 104 m long: about 23 cars parked nose to tail.
- Still in service after 42 years.
multiple unit: A self-propelled train: motors are spread under the passenger cars, so no separate locomotive.
