what is it?
The V/Line VLocity, sometimes called the VLocity 160, is a diesel multiple unit (DMU) train built in Dandenong by Bombardier Transportation and, later, by Alstom, for V/Line, the regional rail operator in the Australian state of Victoria. Continuously in production since 2003, the VLocity is the highest-speed train in the V/Line fleet, with a top speed of 160 km/h (100 mph). As of August 2026, all 141 Vlocity sets have entered service.

- First built 21 years ago, in 2005.
- Top speed is 1.2× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).
- At full speed it would cover Amsterdam–Utrecht (≈ 40 km) in 15 minutes.
- Weighs about as much as 29 African elephants (~6 t each).
- 75.8 m long: about 17 cars parked nose to tail.
- Seats 224: 4 full city buses (~50 seats each).
- Still in service after 21 years.
multiple unit: A self-propelled train: motors are spread under the passenger cars, so no separate locomotive.
