what is it?
The Lockheed P-2 Neptune (designated P2V by the United States Navy (USN) prior to September 1962) was a maritime patrol and antisubmarine warfare (ASW) aircraft. It was developed for the USN by Lockheed to replace the Lockheed PV-1 Ventura and PV-2 Harpoon and was replaced, in turn, by the Lockheed P-3 Orion. Designed as a land-based aircraft, the Neptune never made a carrier landing, but a few were converted and deployed as carrier-launched (using JATO assist), stop-gap nuclear bombers that would have to land on shore or ditch.
How to recognise it: 4 jet engines · retractable tricycle gear · 31.7 m wingspan
base stats
Bars compare against all aircraft: 3,500 km/h, 20,000 km, 850 seats; size and number built on a log scale up to 640 t (An-225) and 45,000 built (Cessna 172).
fun facts
- First flew 81 years ago, in 1945.
- Top speed is 4.5× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).
- Wingspan of 31.7 m: about 7 cars parked nose to tail.
- Fully loaded it can weigh as much as 6 African elephants (~6 t each).
jet: Gas turbine pushing air out the back (turbofan or turbojet): fast and high-flying.
