what is it?
The Lockheed AC-130 gunship is a heavily armed, long-endurance, ground-attack variant of the C-130 Hercules transport, fixed-wing aircraft. It carries a wide array of ground-attack weapons that are integrated with sensors, navigation, and fire-control systems. Since its large profile and low operating altitudes around 7,000 feet (2,100 m) make it an easy target, its close air support missions are usually flown at night.
How to recognise it: 8 turboprops · high wing · retractable tricycle gear · 40.4 m wingspan
base stats
Bars compare against all aircraft: 3,500 km/h, 20,000 km, 850 seats; size and number built on a log scale up to 640 t (An-225) and 45,000 built (Cessna 172).
fun facts
- First flew 60 years ago, in 1966.
- Top speed is 5.1× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).
- Wingspan of 40.4 m: about 9 cars parked nose to tail.
- Fully loaded it can weigh as much as 12 African elephants (~6 t each).
- Can fly 1.3× higher than Mount Everest (8,849 m).
turboprop: A jet-style turbine turning a propeller: efficient on short hops.
