what is it?
The Convair B-58 Hustler is a supersonic strategic bomber, the first capable of Mach 2 flight. Designed and produced by American aircraft manufacturer Convair, a division of General Dynamics, the B-58 was developed during the 1950s for the United States Air Force (USAF) Strategic Air Command (SAC). To achieve the high speeds desired, Convair chose a delta-wing design used by contemporary interceptors such as the Convair F-102.
How to recognise it: 4 jet engines · delta wing · 17.3 m wingspan
base stats
Bars compare against all aircraft: 3,500 km/h, 20,000 km, 850 seats; size and number built on a log scale up to 640 t (An-225) and 45,000 built (Cessna 172).
fun facts
- First flew 70 years ago, in 1956.
- Top speed is 16.3× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).
- Faster than sound: up to Mach 1.7 (sea-level speed of sound ≈ 1,235 km/h).
- Wingspan of 17.3 m: about 4 cars parked nose to tail.
- Fully loaded it can weigh as much as 13 African elephants (~6 t each).
- Range of 7,593 km: Amsterdam to New York (≈5,850 km) without stopping.
- Can fly 2.2× higher than Mount Everest (8,849 m).
jet: Gas turbine pushing air out the back (turbofan or turbojet): fast and high-flying.
