what is it?
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, often shortened to Boeing 787, is an American wide-body airliner developed and manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. After dropping its unconventional Sonic Cruiser project, Boeing announced the conventional 7E7 on January 29, 2003, which focused largely on efficiency. The program was launched on April 26, 2004, with an order for 50 aircraft from All Nippon Airways (ANA), targeting a 2008 introduction.
How to recognise it: 2 jet engines · low wing · retractable tricycle gear · 60.1 m wingspan
base stats
Bars compare against all aircraft: 3,500 km/h, 20,000 km, 850 seats; size and number built on a log scale up to 640 t (An-225) and 45,000 built (Cessna 172).
fun facts
- First flew 17 years ago, in 2009.
- Wingspan of 60.1 m: about 13 cars parked nose to tail.
- Fully loaded it can weigh as much as 43 African elephants (~6 t each).
- Range of 15,370 km: Amsterdam to New York (≈5,850 km) without stopping.
- Can fly 1.5× higher than Mount Everest (8,849 m).
jet: Gas turbine pushing air out the back (turbofan or turbojet): fast and high-flying.
