what is it?
The Antonov An-22 "Antei" (Russian: Ан-22 Антей, romanized: An-22 Antey; lit. 'Antaeus'; NATO reporting name: "Cock") is a retired heavy turboprop military transport aircraft developed by the Antonov Design Bureau and produced by the Tashkent State Aircraft Factory in the Soviet Union. It was the first wide-body transport aircraft and has continued to possess the largest cargo deck for any turboprop-powered aircraft in the world into the twenty-first century. The An-22 was designed during the early 1960s; despite its large size, it had a relatively conventional configuration, possessing a high-mounted wing and being powered by four Kuznetsov NK-12MA turboprop engines that each drove a pair of contra-rotating propellers.
How to recognise it: 4 turboprops · shoulder wing · retractable tricycle gear · 64.4 m wingspan
base stats
Bars compare against all aircraft: 3,500 km/h, 20,000 km, 850 seats; size and number built on a log scale up to 640 t (An-225) and 45,000 built (Cessna 172).
fun facts
- First flew 61 years ago, in 1965.
- Top speed is 5.7× a car on the Dutch motorway (130 km/h).
- Wingspan of 64.4 m: about 14 cars parked nose to tail.
- Fully loaded it can weigh as much as 42 African elephants (~6 t each).
- Range of 5,000 km: 28× Amsterdam to Brussels.
- Can fly 1.0× higher than Mount Everest (8,849 m).
turboprop: A jet-style turbine turning a propeller: efficient on short hops.
