Designate the first marine protected areas under the High Seas Treaty
High seas (areas beyond national jurisdiction)
The BBNJ (High Seas) Agreement entered into force on 17 January 2026; its first COP is set for 11–22 January 2027 in New York. Set up the scientific body and designate the first high-seas protected areas so the treaty actually protects ocean life beyond national borders.
