De and het
Dutch has two words for "the": de and het. About two thirds of nouns take de.
- Plurals always take de: het kind → de kinderen.
- People are almost always de (de moeder, de broer). Exception: het kind, het meisje.
- Diminutives (-je) are always het: het huisje, het meisje.
- Otherwise: learn every noun with its article.
"A/an" is always een (pronounced like "un").
