Een cleft sentence splitst een zin om één deel te benadrukken:
- It-cleft: It was Tom who broke it. (niet iemand anders)
- What-cleft: What I need is a holiday.
- All-cleft: All I want is some peace. — Het enige wat ik wil…
- The reason why: The reason why I left is that …
- The thing is: The thing is, I'm broke.
Handig in het Engels, omdat je (anders dan in het Nederlands) de woordvolgorde niet vrij kunt omgooien voor nadruk.
